Erich Meyer (graphic designer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erich Meyer (also Erich Meyer-Stephan ; born October 4, 1898 in Offenbach am Main , † April 16, 1983 in Waldshut ) was a German graphic artist and typographer . He received his training from Rudolf Koch at the technical training institutes in Offenbach, today the University of Design .

Meyer developed the Tannenberg typeface family from 1933 to 1935 after the National Socialists declared the “German” Fraktur their preferred font in 1933 and a corresponding demand arose. The Tannenberg is one of the broken ("Fraktur") typefaces, it was produced by the D. Stempel AG type foundry in Frankfurt am Main and was found relatively quickly in book and magazine design, advertising and National Socialist propaganda.

The font was named after the “heroic” battle near Tannenberg , in which German troops under Paul von Hindenburg and Erich Ludendorff stopped the advance of Russian troops in 1914 . The font has not been produced since 1945 and is rarely used. However, in 1946 the “ Stuttgart Declaration ” of the EKD was set in the “Ordinance and News Gazette of the Evangelical Church in Germany” in the Tannenberg .

In 1937 Meyer designed the Woellmer Fraktur and Woellmer Fraktur semi-bold fonts for the Wilhelm Woellmer type foundry in Berlin. In 1938, after Woellmer was dissolved, the fonts went to Schriftguss AG in Dresden as Gilden Fraktur .

Meyer later trained as a concert singer in Frankfurt am Main and Darmstadt.
