The St. Mauritius Church is a Catholic parish church in Sotzweiler in Saarland , a district of the Tholey municipality , St. Wendel district . The patron saint of the church is Saint Mauritius . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

Before the construction of today's church, the Catholics from Sotzweiler had to attend the service in Tholey. It was not until 1899 that considerations began to found a church building association , which finally took place on February 24, 1901. After 11 years the association was able to book a credit of 85,000 marks .

In 1913 the foundation stone was laid for the church, which was built according to plans by the architect Wilhelm Hector ( Saarbrücken-St. Johann ). In 1915, the work on the exterior was largely completed. At the end of 1916 the cock was installed on the top of the church tower and on June 17, 1926 the Trier auxiliary bishop Antonius Mönch inaugurated the church. After the church building had no heating for a long time , a functioning heating system was put into operation in January 1932. The church has had a tower clock and bells since 1932 .

Church building

The church building, built in neo-Gothic style, is a three-aisled hall church . The nave , divided into a central nave and two side aisles , is divided into four bays . The south aisle has only three bays. A transept adjoins the nave and a five-sided choir with a polygonal finish. The ceilings of the three naves are formed by ribbed vaults. In the vaulted areas there are paintings with floral motifs.

The church tower is laterally indented into the nave. The exterior of the church is not plastered so that the masonry is visible. It is therefore a fair- faced masonry . The windows are predominantly pointed arch windows with tracery .

Inside the church, the elaborately designed altars with their figures and reliefs stand out. The high altar with the tabernacle is determined by an enthroned figure of Christ in a halo over which two angels hold a banner . The stations of the cross on the walls of the aisles are designed as relief images . The pulpit , which is attached to the left edge of the choir , has filigree tracery on the sound cover .

organ

The construction of the church organ began in 1931 when the old harmonium was to be replaced. The plans for this were presented by the organ building company Stahlhuth ( Aachen ), but they only completed 6 stops of manual II and two stops in the pedal .

It was not until 1953 that Julius Reimsbach ( Wallerfangen ) built the instrument largely according to plans by Stahlhuth.

In 2012 the organ was completely dismantled and restored by Thomas Gaida ( Wemmetsweiler ). Its housing remained gaming table and the keys kept but the fittings and the register switches were replaced. In addition, the pneumatic game and stop action has been replaced by an electric one. On May 6, 2012, the organ was put back into service with a festive concert .

The instrument, which is set up on a gallery in the north aisle, has 16 registers, four of which are auxiliary rows, which can be played on all keyboards in several different pitches. The disposition is as follows:
