history

The first settlement of the area around Knorscheid probably goes back to Roman times . The first evidence of the existence of the place is dated around the year 950 AD, where Knorscheid is mentioned as a parish whose believers have to go on a pilgrimage to the parish festival in honor of St. Lutwinus in Mettlach . From the Middle Ages until the French Revolution, Knorscheid was part of the Nassau-Saarbrücken rule . A station for the optical telegraph line Metz – Mainz was set up on the Hoxberg from 1813 to 1814 during Napoleonic times . From 1815 to 1920 Knorscheid belonged to the Prussian Rhine Province , from 1920 to 1935 to the Saar area administered by the League of Nations and from 1935 to 1945 to the German Reich . In the years from 1945 to 1947, the place was briefly under the US, then the French military government. Knorscheid belonged to the semi-autonomous Saar state from 1947 to 1956 and was politically and economically affiliated to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1957 .

As part of the Saarland regional and administrative reform , the previously independent municipality of Knorscheid was assigned to the municipality of Lebach on January 1, 1974.
