The Humbergturm is a lookout tower at 427.9 m above sea level. NHN high Great Humberg in the south of the city of Kaiserslautern . It stands about 250 m west-southwest of the summit on an open area at a height of about 424 m .
In 1896 the idea of building a tower on the Humberg, which at that time was already a popular lookout mountain for Kaiserslautern citizens, was taken up. To this end, citizens of the city of Kaiserslautern founded the Humberg Association with the aim of financing and building a lookout tower. The founding members included the sewing machine manufacturer Georg Pfaff , Mayor Theodor Orth, the commercial councilors Pfeiffer and Karcher and the malt manufacturer Gelbert.
The tower was built according to the plans of the architect Ludwig von Stempel , who had already made a name for himself with some of the city's public buildings. The Humberg Tower is a monumental sandstone block building typical of historicism . Construction began in the spring of 1899. The building material was broken on site from the rocky plateau of the Humberg. The tower was inaugurated on September 2, 1900. It is 35.8 meters high, and its viewing platform is 28.2 meters above the ground. The spiral staircase inside has 130 steps, plus the 33 steps of the outside staircase at the base.
In 1909, what was then the Humberg Association dissolved. The tower and the association's assets passed into the possession of the city of Kaiserslautern. In 2001 the Humbergturm-Verein Kaiserslautern eV was founded with the aim of preserving the tower and its attractiveness as a hiking destination.
