career

Northern Germany, until 1961

With Union Salzgitter , winger Walter Gawletta won the championship in the amateur league Lower Saxony East in the 1956/57 season and took part in the promotion round to move into the Oberliga Nord . But VfB Lübeck prevailed and signed the attacker from Salzgitter for the round in 1957/58. The Gawletta, which can be used on both wing positions, was also used in this round on April 27, 1957 in the association selection of Lower Saxony in the semi-final game of the amateur country cup together with Gerhard Gollnow , Werner Olk and Horst Wilkening in the 2-0 win against Bavaria. With the Grün-Weiß von der Lohmühle , the newcomer from Salzgitter made his debut on August 11, 1957 at Werder Bremen in the league. Gawletta played 27 games and scored two goals. The round was marked by the relegation battle and the derbies against Phoenix Lübeck . Due to the 0: 2 final defeat on April 6, 1958 at Altona 93 and the simultaneous point win by Phoenix in the home game against Bremerhaven 93, VfB rose one point behind Eintracht Nordhorn and Phoenix Lübeck from the league again. Gawletta signed after relegation at Hannover 96 and remained in the north German football upper house. With the "Reds" he scored nine goals in 22 league games in 1958/59 and placed sixth in the table with Hannover 96 and fellow players Heinz Elzner , Gerhard Gollnow and Heinz Wewetzer . On November 9, 1958, Gawletta was also active in the trade fair cup game against AS Roma. With a goal he said goodbye on matchday 30, in the 4: 3 home win on April 26, 1959 against Werder Bremen from Hanover and played again from the 1959/60 round at VfB Lübeck, which had returned to the league. With his nine goals in 25 games, he helped VfB to stay in the league in 1960. When he was only able to play in eleven matches for the Hanseatic city because of an injury in the second year, 1960/61, the Lohmühle team was relegated to the amateur camp. Gawletta accepted the offer of 1. FC Kaiserslautern from the Oberliga Südwest for the 1961/62 round and stormed into the Betzenberg Stadium over the next few years . For Lübeck he played 63 games with 13 goals and for Hanover 22 games with nine goals in the Oberliga Nord.

Southwest Germany, 1961 to 1968

Walter Gawletta won the championship in the Oberliga Südwest with 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the 1962/63 round. The "Lauterer" thus finally qualified for the new Bundesliga for the 1963/64 round and moved into the final round of the 1963 German soccer championship. The man from Lübeck was used in all six final matches against 1. FC Köln, 1. FC Nürnberg and Hertha BSC. In total, Gawletta played 28 league games for Kaiserslautern from 1961 to 1963 in the southwest, scoring five goals. He belongs to the group of active players who opened the new performance class in German football with the starting game on August 24, 1963. Kaiserslautern scored the first point with the attackers Gawletta, Willy Reitgaßl , Winfried Richter , Jacobus Prins and Harald Braner with a 1-1 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt . Lautern came in twelfth place and Gawletta had played 19 games and scored three goals.

For the round 1964/65 he signed a contract with the Bundesliga relegated 1. FC Saarbrücken and played with the Saarlanders in the Regionalliga Südwest . In his first round in Saarland, Gawletta was able to celebrate the championship with his team- mates Werner Hesse , Emil Poklitar , Erich Rohe and Heinz Vollmar and thus the entry into the Bundesliga promotion round. He completed all six games against Bayern Munich, Alemannia Aachen and Tennis Borussia Berlin and Saarbrücken came in second behind the newly promoted Bayern Munich. In the next two rounds - 1965/66 and 1966/67 - the veteran was also actively involved in winning the two runner-up championships in the Regionalliga Südwest. After the 1967/68 round, after 79 league games and ten hits, he stopped playing at 1. FC Saarbrücken and went back to the amateur camp at VfB Dillingen .
