history

Sports clubs in Weingarten until 1945

Even before the Second World War , several sports clubs were founded in Weingarten. The free sports club Weingarten , founded in 1921, was able to offer a football team , as did the originally Catholic DJK . In 1933, both clubs were dissolved and a successor club was founded with the Volksgemeinschaft football club . He suffered the same fate as many other clubs in Germany: He was dissolved in World War II. Many players had previously been drafted into the Wehrmacht .

SV Weingarten 1946

After the war, some sports enthusiasts quickly got together in Weingarten and founded the Weingarten sports club in 1946 . In addition to soccer, handball was also offered. The 1948/49 season ended with a first success for Weingarten's footballers: they won the district championship in the district of Germersheim . In the following decades, the club played mostly on the district level, but was able to celebrate some district championships.

The club's premises were obtained from the community in 1947. From 1959 to 1962 and from 1974 to 1977 club houses were built in-house.

The "arena" of SV Weingarten

In the 90s, friendly matches were organized against Borussia Dortmund (1992) and against FC Schalke 04 (1996, for the 50th anniversary of the club). The sporting boom began at the end of that decade. This was made possible by financial donations and contacts from a patron. As a newcomer to the Vorderpfalz regional league, the SVW rose directly to the state league as champions in 1999, where the same feat could be repeated. In the Association League Southwest the championship could be won in the second year (2001/02). Thus, the team began in 2002 in the league. Helmut Behr was responsible for the ascent as a trainer .

In 2002, the new construction of the club complex began. For this purpose, the playing field was relocated and, among other things, a grandstand was built. The facility, known as the “arena”, has a capacity of 6500 spectators.

In the big league they played a good role and came seventh in the first season. Peter Rubeck had replaced Helmut Behr as coach . In the second season Weingarten even led the table for some time, but at the end of the season was four points behind the champions TuS Koblenz . After the first day of the following season 2004/05 Rubeck resigned from his coaching office. As later became known, his resignation was also based on late salary payments that had been going on since autumn 2003. So he wanted to “set an example” and stand in front of the players who were also affected by the irregularities. Successor was Günther Birkle, with whom SVW finished the 2004/05 season in fifth place.

In 2005 the financial difficulties, which resulted mainly from the construction of the arena, became acute. Various rescue attempts failed and at the end of July 2005 all teams were canceled from the game. The club was insolvent.
