Frédéric Maurin (born March 29, 1976 in Harfleur ) is a French fusion musician ( guitar , minimoog , composition ) and big band leader.

Frédéric Maurin began studying music at the age of seven at the Conservatoire de Notre-Dame de Gravenchon . He first learned to play guitar under the influence of Jimi Hendrix , Pink Floyd , King Crimson and Frank Zappa .

After studying engineering and graduating in physics, he first worked as a teacher. For several years he taught biology at French schools in Bolivia and then in France. He then began training as a musician.

Since 2005, Maurin has composed and conducted the repertoire of Ping Machine , a 15-piece music ensemble that is considered a reference for the new jazz scene in Europe. With this ensemble he has developed unique music that fuses jazz and new music . As a composer he is influenced by György Ligeti and Steve Coleman , but also by Charles Mingus , Meshuggah and Gérard Grisey .

Maurin is still a member of the Trio RCM, in which he dedicates himself to the music of Frank Zappa with Yves Rechsteiner and Henri-Charles Caget. With Christelle Séry and Pierre Durand he formed the trio Flamenco Punk . He has also appeared as a guitarist in a number of projects such as Amalgamme as a sideman. Between 2011 and 2017 he was President of the French Federation of Grands Formats , which represents artists who play music in large ensembles. In 2018 he was commissioned to lead the Orchester National de Jazz .

Prizes and awards

With Ping Machine Maurin won the composition prize of the La Défense Jazz Festival in 2006 ; He has since received other prizes and awards with the group, such as the Choc de l'année 2013 and 2016 from Jazz Magazine , a nomination for the Victoires du Jazz 2014 or a composition commission from the Ministère de la Culture .
