Marc Steckar (born June 1, 1935 in Cherbourg , † June 27, 2015 in Bessancourt , Val-d'Oise ) was a French jazz musician ( trombone , bass trombone , euphonium , tuba ) and composer.

Steckar had been learning the cello since he was eight and then also played the trumpet . During his studies at the Paris National Conservatory in 1953 he switched to the trombone, which he studied with André Lafosse . After an interruption due to his military service in the Algerian War , he completed his training in 1959; he received the second prize for trombone. Over the next few years he worked in Benny Bennet's big band, in the Aimé Barelli orchestra in the Monte Carlo casino and in Olympia (where he accompanied Marlene Dietrich and Nat King Cole and went on a European tour), in Paul Mauriat's orchestra , the Charles Aznavour accompanied, and in the big band of Daniel Janin, who supported Édith Piaf , Jacques Brel , Gilbert Bécaud and Sammy Davis Jr. at the Olympia in 1961 . In the next few years he worked as a studio musician, among others for Michel Legrand , Vladimir Cosma and for various television shows, but also again at the Olympia for Roland Petit and Zizi Jeanmaire . Between 1973 and 1983 he accompanied Claude Nougaro with Eddy Louiss and Maurice Vander ; he was also a member of Martial Solal's big band and recorded film music with Vander. In 1981 he founded his formation Steckar Tubapack , in which he mostly played with three other tuba players and a drummer, with whom he released numerous albums and toured internationally. In 1984 he also founded the Elephant Tuba Horde Big Band . Since 1994 he has also composed concerts for euphonium, tubas and trombones. In addition, he has fused his music, which emphasizes the deep brass instruments, with French harmony orchestras or Breton bagpipe music on various occasions . Steckar can also be heard on albums by François Jeanneau ( Éphémère , 1977), Illinois Jacquet and Sonny Rhodes .

Prizes and awards

In 1982 he received the Prix ​​Boris Vian of the Académie de Jazz with Steckar Tubapack . In 1999 he was awarded the Prix ​​Pierre et Germaine Labole composition prize by SACEM .
