Ingrid Maria Oberkanins (born September 8, 1964 in Alberndorf in der Riedmark ) is an Austrian jazz musician ( percussion , vibraphone , composition ) who was initially active in classical music and then in world music .

Oberkanins received piano and drum lessons in her childhood and youth; Between 1979 and 1984 she attended the Adalbert-Stifter-Gymnasium in Linz up to the Matura . From 1984 she lived in Vienna, where she studied music education / history and social studies at the University of Vienna until 1991 ; In addition, she studied percussion from 1986 to 1990 at the University of Music and Performing Arts there . After completing her studies, she took private lessons in African and Afro-American rhythm with Dudu Tucci in Brazil, José Eladio Amat in Cuba and Famoudou Konaté in West Africa.

As an orchestral musician, Oberkanins was active for several years in the Jeunesse Orchestra Linz under Franz Welser-Möst and in the Vienna Young Orchestra under Herwig Reiter . In the field of jazz and world music, she was a member of L'ardeur, Out of Blue, Pannonian wind orchestra, the orchestra of Sabina Hank and Célia Mara Potencia X . Furthermore, Mathias Rüegg brought her to several productions of the Vienna Art Orchestra . In 2002 she founded the percussion trio Rhythmusa together with the drummers Natalie Dietrich and Jacqueline Ott Yesilalp, which released the album Earth in 2004 . With Esther Bächlin , Gina Schwarz and Stephanie Wagner , she runs the playground4 project , which released the album Ground Running on JazzHausMusik in 2020 . With Jojo Lackner and Lukas Knöfler she formed the trio Strange Ahead . She also worked with Christian Muthspiel ( Harmonics Mundi ), the Janusensemble, EOS, Annett4tett , Lia Pale ( Gone Too Far 2013, My Poet's Love 2015, The Schumann Songbook 2017), Ilse Riedler and the actress Brigitte Karner . She can also be heard on albums by Bass Doublings , Agnes Heginger ( Songs and Other Noices 2001), Julia Malischnig ( Kiss of Life 2015) and Lisa Prandstätter ( Playground Convention 2015). She also works on theater projects; she composed the music for the production of secret thing Rosa Luxemburg of the Portraittheater Wien, which was also performed nationwide.

In 2004, Oberkanins received the Hans Koller Prize as “Side (wo) man of the year”. Since autumn 2004 she has been teaching percussion and mallets at the Vienna University of Music. In addition, she leads workshops and training courses.
