Esther Bächlin

Esther Bächlin (born June 27, 1965 in Basel ) is a Swiss jazz musician (piano, vocals, composition).

Live and act

Bächlin has been playing the piano since she was six and sang in choirs for many years. She received classical piano lessons for eight years. Then she attended the St.Gallen vocational jazz school until 1989. She received piano lessons from Art Lande , Uli Scherer and Elena Szirmai. She took singing lessons from Malcolm Green , Renata Friederich and Lauren Newton for several years . Since 1984 she has given concerts at home and abroad; she belonged to the groups of Jenny Menna, Peter Wydler, Katrin Marti and Renata Friederichs. 1989-1991 she performed with the project Fe Males of the Vienna Art Orchestra on. She formed her own quintet, performed in solo programs and played with Hélène Labarrière , Ingrid Jensen , Michael Gassmann , Wolfgang Puschnig , Marilyn Mazur , Co Streiff and Heiri Känzig . She runs the Playground project with Stephanie Wagner and Gina Schwarz .

Bächlin has a broad stylistic background; she mainly composes in the border area between classical jazz and free improvisation . She has been teaching at the Zurich University of Music and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences since 1995 and has been a répétiteur at the jazz department of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences since 2003 .

In 2006 Bächlin received a work grant from the Canton of Lucerne for her project inspiring music-in between with John Voirol and Lauren Newton.
