Gábor Bolla

Gábor Bolla (born October 18, 1988 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian jazz musician ( soprano and tenor saxophone , composition ).

Live and act

Bolla, who grew up in a Roma family, learned to play the clarinet by himself from the age of ten. He won the Hungarian music school competition at the age of twelve. He got to know jazz through the music of his parents and switched to the saxophone at the age of 15. Robert Maloschik from the Hungarian State Radio discovered and promoted Bolla. A few months later he played with Hungarian jazz greats, including at the Getxo Jazz Festival in Bilbao, Spain. In 2004 he worked as a guest soloist with the Vienna Art Orchestra .

Bolla subsequently appeared with musicians such as David Murray , Guy Barker , Art Themes , John Critchinson , Bryan Spring , Benny Golson , Johnny Griffin , Roy Hargrove , Kirk Lightsey or Gregory Hutchinson and founded his own band. He can also be heard on albums by Gáspár Laci / Bárhol Jársz Elemér Balázs , Barcza Horváth József and Pete York . After a concert by Bolla in April 2011, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung highlighted the Coltrane- like speed of the young saxophonist, whom it characterized as an “improviser of overwhelming independence”. He has lived in Copenhagen since 2014.

Prizes and awards

In 2003 Bolla qualified for the semifinals of the World Saxophone Competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival . In 2004 he received the Hans Koller Prize as “Talent of the Year”. In 2005 he won both the Audience Award and the Grand Prix at the Tremplin Jazz Festival competition in Avignon.
