Martin Koller

Martin Koller (born September 16, 1971 in Villach ) is an Austrian guitarist .

Koller first studied guitar at the Carinthian State Conservatory in Klagenfurt . In Boston he continued his studies at Berklee College of Music with Gary Burton , Mick Goodrick , George Garzone and others and graduated summa cum laude in professional music .

His work focuses on the implementation of current trends in his compositions, initially with the Third Movement, founded in 1994 (with Gerald Preinfalk ). He continued on this path with musicians such as Will Calhoun and Terri Lyne Carrington and the formation of Martin Koller's Third Movement, which was expanded to a quartet, and with Strange Balls of Fire (with Jojo Mayer and Patrice Moret ). He also worked with Nils Petter Molvær , DJ Soul Slinger and the Vienna Art Orchestra .

Koller has performed at numerous well-known international jazz festivals, including the Montreux Jazz Festival , the North Sea Jazz Festival , the International Jazz Festival Saalfelden , the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal and the London Jazz Festival etc.

Honourings and prices

During his training at Berklee, he won various prizes, some of which were associated with scholarships, such as the Berklee Entering Student Scholarship in 1993 , the William Leavitt Memorial Scholarship as best guitarist of the year in 1994, the Berklee Achievement Scholarship in 1994 and 1995 and the Berklee Guitar Department Achievement Award in 1995 . In 1999 he won the Hans Koller Prize in the two categories Newcomer of the Year 1999 and Album of the Year 1999 (with his CD Martin Koller's Third Movement - Right Now ).
