Addison Free

Addison Frei (born January 22, 1992 in Lawrence / Kansas ) is an American jazz musician ( piano , composition ).

Frei already performed as a ten-year-old. He first studied at the University of North Texas , where he graduated summa cum laude , and since 2014 at the Juilliard School in New York. With the One O'Clock Lab Band he took part in the Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey. With his AMP Trio , which includes bassist Perrin Grace and drummer Matt Young, he toured the United States; with this band he can be heard on the albums Two Twos and Lab 2013 . The AMP Trio accompanied Aaron Hedenstrom, Adam Hutcheson and Spenser Liszt as a rhythm section in the recording studio. The AMP Trio completed a tour of Japan with singer Tahira Clayton. Frei has previously worked with Clayton for his single and music video Postcard (2016). He also researched political issues with a (digital) EP, Future Speak (2017).

In 2014 he presented his debut album Intentions (Armored Records), which was followed by Transit in 2016 , on which Janis Siegel can also be heard. As a trio (with Tamir Shmerling and Mario Gonzi ) the album No Defense was released by TCB in 2018 .

Frei has won numerous competitions, most recently the UNISA International Jazz Piano Competition in 2016 and the Parmigiani Montreux Jazz Piano Solo Competition and the DC Jazz Prix in 2017 . As a composer, he has already received the Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award from ASCAP twice for his works and imaginative arrangements .
