German IQ Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German IQ Prize has been awarded by Mensa in Germany (MinD) since 2004 to honor intelligent ideas from all areas of science and everyday life.

Individuals as well as research groups, associations or institutions can be nominated. Cafeteria members and previous award winners are entitled to make suggestions (as of 2017), while non-members were also allowed to make suggestions in the past. The price is awarded through an online vote by the members of the Mensa Germany association and is not endowed . The award took place annually until 2018, after which the cycle changed to every two years.

history

  • In 2004 the IQ Prize went to Professor Albrecht Beutelspacher from Giessen . The Mathematikum he founded in 2002 , the world's first mathematics museum, creates exciting and original access to mathematics for young and old.
  • In 2005 the IQ Prize went to television journalist and presenter Günther Jauch . With his program The Great IQ Test, he promotes a casual approach to intelligence, knowledge and giftedness. He draws attention to the topic in broad sections of the population and manages to initiate an open discussion about it.
  • In 2006 the IQ Prize was awarded to Die Sendung mit der Maus .
  • In 2007 the IQ Prize went to WDR presenter Ranga Yogeshwar .
  • In 2008 the comedian Dieter Nuhr was honored with the IQ Prize.
  • In 2009 the award went to the physics professor and television presenter Harald Lesch .
  • In 2010, the magazine Spektrum der Wissenschaft won the award for the first time in six years that a medium outside of television won the prize.
  • In 2011 the prize was awarded in two categories. In the science / innovation category , Siegfried Rotthäuser was honored for his political satire campaign Heatball, and in the culture / media category, the author Richard David Precht for his book The Art of Not Being Egoist . There was controversy over the nomination of Thilo Sarrazin , but this was approved despite strong protests.
  • In 2012 the prize in the culture / media category went to doctor and cabaret artist Eckart von Hirschhausen . In the Science and Innovation category, there were two winners due to a tie: Franz Porzsolt , Head of Clinical Economics at Ulm University Hospital , and Florian Freistetter from ScienceBlogs .
  • In 2013, the IQ Prize in the Science / Innovation category went to the company Auticon , which is the first company in Germany to exclusively employ people in the autism spectrum as consultants in the IT sector.
  • In 2014, Jonny Lee Miller won the vote in the culture / media category , as the weekly newspaper Der Freitag reported. In the preparation of the election, there had been controversy over the nomination of Edward Snowden . The nomination submitted by two cafeteria members, including one member of the IQ Prize Commission, was initially confirmed by the election commission. At the request of the board of directors, the electoral commission voted again on Snowden; this second vote ended in a draw. According to the IQ price regulations, a nomination is deemed rejected in the event of a tie in the election commission. The nomination of Snowden was subsequently refused by the board of directors, which meant that Snowden did not even stand for election in the general vote of all members on the winner. A critic of the approach then called for the election of Miller in order to reduce the award to absurdity.
  • In 2015, Walter Diehl, Head of Department at the Hessian Ministry of Culture, was recognized in the Science / Innovation category for his 15 years of work in promoting gifted children. The IQ Prize in the Intelligence category for the common good goes to foodsharing.de , in the Intelligent Transfer of Knowledge category to Daniele Ganser and in the category gifted in public to the ArbeiterKind initiative .

After the IQ Prize had always been awarded at the association's annual meeting, from 2017 the award year was used to officially name the prize. Therefore there is no IQ Prize 2016 .
