Philipp Hübl (born November 21, 1975 in Hanover ) is a German philosopher , author and publicist .

Life

Hübl studied philosophy and linguistics in Berlin, Berkeley, New York and Oxford. Between 2006 and 2009 he was a member of a research group funded by the Volkswagen Foundation called "The Body-Project: interdisciplinary investigations on bodily experiences". He received his doctorate in 2010 with Geert Keil at the Humboldt University in Berlin with a thesis on the subject of Action and Consciousness . Hübl had lectureships for philosophy at the RWTH Aachen and at the Humboldt University in Berlin. From 2012 to 2018 he was Junior Professor for Theoretical Philosophy at the University of Stuttgart and pursued a habilitation project on the subject of Causation and Explanation . Hübl has researched the philosophy of mind, the theory of action, the philosophy of language, metaphysics and the philosophy of science. Since 2017 he has been writing the column "Hübls Aufklerung" in the philosophy magazine .

Hübl is the son of the economist Lothar Hübl (* 1941) and has two brothers.

Books

In 2012 his first book, Episode the White Rabbit, was published . In it he introduces modern philosophy and gives clear answers to fundamental questions in life such as: Can you live without feelings? What is awareness Does death have a purpose? The book was on the Spiegel bestseller list for over a year, was translated into several languages and was awarded the Mindelheim Philosophy Prize.

In 2015 his book Der Untergrund des Denkens: A Philosophy of the Unconscious was published by Rowohlt . In it, Hübl presents a fundamental philosophical analysis of unconscious processes. He considers the thesis of the power of the unconscious to be a myth and argues that reason and controlled attention protect us from manipulation.

In his 2018 essay Bullshit Resistance , which was published in the Virtues for the 21st Century series, Hübl emphasizes the duty of critical thinking in order to distinguish truth from untruths and thus counter the ubiquitous conspiracy theories and fake news . He also warns against tribal thinking, that is, blindly following all positions of one's own political position.

In spring 2019, Hübl's book Die aufgeregte Gesellschaft was published: How emotions shape our morals and intensify polarization . In it, Hübl deals with the question of how personality traits determine certain emotions, which in turn have an influence on moral attitudes and thus also political preferences. He invokes positions in moral psychology to explain the polarization in politics and society.

Positions as a publicist

Fake news and bullshit

At the Römerberg Talks 2017 in Frankfurt, Hübl advocated the thesis that it is not the current age that is post-factual, but rather the thinking style of a certain social group, which can be found primarily in the right-wing extremist camp. The production of fake news and the accusation of the lying press are “two sides of the same coin”, because both maneuvers are “driven by the desire that the world should fit with one's own normative view. If this is not the case, you have two options for avoiding cognitive dissonance , i.e. an inner tension: revising your own views or reinterpreting the world. "People with an" intuitive thinking style "would rather choose the second option.

Right shift

Hübl sees the right-wing radical thinking style as an extreme form of the conservative thinking style, in which authority, loyalty and disgust play a role. “There, loyalty and tribalism are transformed into loyalty to 'blood and soil' and thus to xenophobia. The desire for authority and structure turns into a longing for the autocratic leader who cleans up properly - if necessary at the expense of democracy. The preference for purity is increased to disgust: homosexuality is considered 'disgusting', as are unclear gender roles or 'left-wing green' ideas. The 'angry citizens' are actually 'disgusting citizens'. ”The disgust disposition makes people“ traditionalists. Conservatives generally shy away from anything new; they rarely react positively to surprising stimuli and prefer order and familiarity in life. In the case of progressives, on the other hand, the tendency to disgust is much less pronounced: They accordingly need less structure and order in life, they value individuality, creativity and new impressions. "

God and Religion

Hübl is an avowed atheist . He argues against the view that “Western values” spring from Christianity. “Our ideas of democracy, freedom of expression or equality between men and women do not come from the Bible, but from humanism, the Enlightenment and later freedom movements. Democracy and equality are alien to most religions. "

Hatred and violence on the net

According to Hübl, the Germans are not in a "moral disorientation"; rather, "The crime rate, especially of capital crimes ... has fallen continuously since the Second World War until today". However, the visibility of dissatisfaction and hatred has increased through the social networks.

Engagement and media

As a member of Think Tank 30 of the Club of Rome , Hübl and Andreas Barthelmess proposed a reorganization of the federal territory , which only provides for six federal states. Together with members of Think Tank 30, he wrote an open letter to the then Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadineschad , in which they invited him to enter into a dialogue with the West. Hübl is committed to full equality in gay marriage. In the 3sat magazine Kulturzeit at the end of March 2020, Hübl discussed philosophical questions on the occasion of the Corona crisis in the series Philosophical Corona Diary .
