The Römerberg Talks are a series of panel discussions that have been held in Frankfurt am Main since 1973 . You deal with current social and cultural issues.

organization

The Römerberg Talks are organized on a voluntary basis by a group of committed citizens. Admission is free.

The initiators of the first events were Heinz Willi Wirth , Willi Reiss (IG Metall chairman, member of the city administration of Frankfurt, later head of the city council) and Maria Christiana Leven. They formed the voluntary board of trustees that organized the events. Hilmar Hoffmann , the Frankfurt head of culture at the time, accepted Wirth's suggestion to hold "a round of talks ... in a relaxed setting as a kind of symposium" to discuss "explosive and current issues from art and culture", following the example of the Darmstadt Talks in September 1971 very benevolently.

The series was moderated for many years by Erhard Denninger together with Wilfried F. Schoeller . The organizers so far have also included Iring Fetscher , Klaus Reichert , Helmut Ridder , Alexander U. Martens and Eva Demski .

Since 2006, the informal group that is currently organizing the talks has been part of the Römerberg talk e. V. merged. Starting in the same year, the discussions are moderated by Alf Mentzer (senior editor for literature at hr2-kultur ).

The series of events is financially supported by the City of Frankfurt am Main and the State of Hesse. It is also supported by the Frankfurter Rundschau and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung .

The duration of the conferences was initially different: Most of the time, discussion events lasting several days were held. For some time now, only one-day events have been organized that take place in spring and autumn.

The venue has also changed several times over the years. The podiums originally took place in the meeting room of the Frankfurt city council in the town hall, the Römer . The name of the series of talks is derived from the public square in front of the town hall, the Römerberg , where larger political meetings are traditionally held. During the 1990s, they moved to the Paulskirche , whereas the series has been taking place in the Chagall Hall of the Schauspiel Frankfurt since the turn of the millennium .

Topics and participants

Subject on November 3, 2018

The events consist of lectures by invited speakers on the topic and panel discussions with the participation of the audience. The individual lectures with discussions take place approximately every hour and last up to eight hours including the lunch break:

The Römerberg Talks address current political and cultural problems and questions. Participants are politicians and artists as well as scientists and publicists. As a result, the discussions touch on points that are of great importance for the development of the state, economy, culture and civil society . In the early days, the student movement around 1968 was a topic that had to be dealt with in the discussion. In the mid-1980s, the so-called historians' dispute began with an article that the historian Ernst Nolte published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, because he was unable to present it as a speech at the Römerberg Talks in 1986. At the turn of the century around 1990, intellectuals from Western and Eastern Europe were invited to exchange ideas. In 2001 they responded to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in New York City. Europe was the topic of the Römerberg Talks several times (2019, 2014, 2003, 2002, 1997, 1992, 1990, 1988).

Participants included Pierre Berteaux , Hans Magnus Enzensberger , Erich Fried , Jean Améry , Karl Krolow , Peter O. Chotjewitz , Oskar Negt , Ernst-Otto Czempiel , Erhard Eppler , Horst-Eberhard Richter , Walter Boehlich , Claus Leggewie , Ekkehart Krippendorff , Harald Welzer and Daniel Cohn-Bendit .

In November 2018, the event took place for the first time in cooperation with the Normative Orders Cluster of Excellence at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main .
