Walther Christoph Zimmerli

Walther Christoph Zimmerli (born May 6, 1945 in Zurich ) is a Swiss professor of philosophy .

Life

His parents were Irmgard Zimmerli, née von der Ropp , and theology professor Walther Theodor Zimmerli (1907-1983). Walther Zimmerli spent his school days at a humanistic grammar school in Göttingen . He completed two years of military service in Switzerland. In 1963 he went to Yale to study .

He studied philosophy, German and English at the Universities of Göttingen and Zurich . After his doctorate in 1971 he worked as an assistant and lecturer for philosophy in Zurich and completed his habilitation in 1978. He then switched to a full professorship at the Technical University of Braunschweig , where he stayed for ten years. The next stations were the universities of Bamberg and Erlangen-Nuremberg . In 1996 he moved to the Philipps University of Marburg and in 1999 (as the successor to the founding president Konrad Schily ) to the private University of Witten / Herdecke .

From June 2002 to the end of March 2007 he was founding president of the AutoUni of Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg . In 2003, the TU Braunschweig appointed Zimmerli an honorary professor .

On February 27, 2007 he was elected by the Senate of the Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus with a narrow majority in front of his opponent, Michael Daxner , as the new President of the university. On May 15, 2007, he took up his post as President, which he held until June 30, 2013.

Among other things, Zimmerli is known in the field of political philosophy, where he takes the opinion that so-called total peace can be brought about as a combination of freedom and friendship in all areas of human coexistence.

Zimmerli is or was a member of acatech (Convention for Technical Sciences), the Senate of the Lower Saxony Foundation and the Senate of the GISMA Business School in Hanover, as well as a full individual member of the Swiss Academy of Technical Sciences (SATW).

He is married with four children and eight grandchildren.
