Lorenzo Priuli
Lorenzo Priuli (* 1489 in Venice ; † August 17, 1559 there ) was the 82nd Doge of Venice . He ruled from 1556 to 1559.
family
The Priuli belonged to the new families , they have been recorded in Venice since 1297. They provided three doges, next to Lorenzo his older brother and successor in the doge office Gerolamo Priuli the doge Antonio Priuli (1618–1623). In addition, 14 procurators and 5 cardinals emerged from the family.
Life
Lorenzo Priuli was the youngest of six brothers. He was married to Zilia Dandolo. He had served the Republic as a notary and as an envoy to the court of Emperor Charles. V. , who knighted him.
Doge's Office
He was elected Doge on June 14, 1556, although he did not enjoy greater sympathy among old or new families or the Venetian people. He was believed to be limited ( meschino ) and it was assumed that he had bought his offices or only filled them pro forma . His government was not a good star for the republic. Typhus broke out in the city and the Terraferma was hit by catastrophic floods, which resulted in famine.
In 1559 there were alliances between France and England and between France and Spain , in which claims to areas in Savoy and Lombardy were registered. Catholic fundamentalist Spain was getting closer to Venice, which was rather liberal in religious matters.
Tomb
His tomb is in the Church of San Salvatore. It is a double tomb for him and for his brother Gerolamo. The two-story tomb, built between 1578 and 1582, was designed by Cesare Franco. The statues of the namesake of the Doges, St. Lorenz and St. Jerome, were made by Giulio del Moro .
