Lorenzo Priuli (born August 9, 1538 in Venice , † January 26, 1600 in Venice) was an Italian politician, cardinal and patriarch .

biography

Lorenzo Priuli was born in Venice in 1538 as the eldest son of Giovanni di Zaccaria Priuli (from the branch "di San Polo al magazen") and Laura di Alvise Donà. His brothers were Alvise (1539-1609, Procurator of San Marco), Zaccaria (1543-1607) and Chiara (wife of Alberto Badoer).

He had a classical education that was also geared towards a political career, so that in 1562 he was elected to the Savi degli Ordini of the Republic of Venice (an advisory but powerless body that was supposed to instruct the young nobility in government) and then in entered the Collegio dei Savi .

In 1566 he was Venice's special envoy for the marriage of Francesco , son of Grand Duke Cosimo I de 'Medici , with Johanna , daughter of Emperor Ferdinand I. From November 27, 1572 he was ambassador to Spain and from 1579 to 1582 to France and then moved to the Holy See from June 11, 1583 to 1586 . In 1586 he became an advisor for the Santa Croce district and in 1587 Provveditore della Zecca . In 1588 he resolved the dispute over the construction of the Rialto Bridge and in 1590 he was elected Podestà of Brescia . On August 4, 1590 he was elected by the Senate of Venice to the role of Patriarch with 122 votes in favor and 79 against.

After accepting the appointment, he was ordained a priest in September 1590.

Elected Patriarch of Venice, he first had to obtain approval because he had not yet been ordained a priest, and then a second approval because he did not yet have a doctorate. Consecrated as bishop, he laid the foundation stone for the Church of San Nicola da Tolentino with a solemn ceremony in 1591 . During his reign as patriarch, he reformed the clergy and prepared the priests himself. In a short letter dated April 25, 1592, Pope Clement VIII urged Patriarch Priuli to visit all the existing churches in his diocese. From 9 to 11 September 1592 he chaired a major synod for the reform of the clergy and, in accordance with the guidelines of the Council of Trent , issued decrees on the use of images in churches. From November 15 to 17, 1594, he led another synod to found new seminaries and in the same year had St. Mark's Basilica restored. At the same time he commissioned the architect Francesco Smeraldi with the construction of the facade of the Basilica San Pietro di Castello , the co- cathedral together with the Basilica San Marco.

He was appointed cardinal priest in the consistory on June 5, 1596, and on June 30 of the same year received the cardinal's hat from Ascanio Colonna, the then private chaplain to His Holiness. Pietro Colombo gave a congratulatory speech on the occasion and Arcangelo Rizzi wrote several poems on the subject. On December 2, 1596 he was assigned the titular church of Santa Maria in Traspontina .

He died on January 26, 1600 in Venice. His funeral was celebrated with great pomp and with the participation of all citizens. His tomb is in the Venice Cathedral, next to the altar of St. John the Evangelist. His nephew Marco Priuli erected an obituary dedicated to him next to the altar of the chapel at his will. His body was exhumed in 1624 and found intact.
