Giovanni Trevisan

Giovanni Trevisan (* 1503 in Venice ; † August 5, 1590 ibid) was an Italian patriarch .

biography

Since 1530 he was an abbot of the Benedictine order in San Cipriano on the island of Murano .

In January 1560 he was elected Patriarch of Venice by the Venetian Senate and was confirmed by Pope Pius IV on the following February 14th . Although he belonged to the Benedictine monks, the Pope allowed him on March 1st to use all the insignia of the secular bishops as a decoration for his abbey.

He took part in the Council of Trent , the result of which he implemented through various initiatives in his diocese.

He died in Venice on August 5, 1590, having headed the patriarchate for 30 years and the abbey for 60 years. He was buried at the altar of St. John the Evangelist in the Basilica of San Pietro di Castello .
