Gerolamo Priuli (born 1486 in Venice ; died November 4, 1567 there ) was 83rd Doge of Venice from 1559 to 1567 .

family

The Priuli were among the new families that had belonged to the nobility since 1297. They were grain dealers, landowners and horse breeders and belonged to the richest families in the republic. They provided three doges, in addition to Gerolamo his younger brother and predecessor in the Doge's office, Lorenzo Priuli , and the doge Antonio Priuli (1618–1623).

Life

Gerolamo was the second youngest of six siblings. He was married to Elena Diedo, also from one of the new families .

The Doge's Office

Since the Dogat Gerolamo Priulis, the gondolas in Venice have been black. In 1562, the city's Senate passed a new anti-luxury law. Since that time all gondolas have been black, only the golden seahorses on both sides of the gondola and the silver metal teeth on the bow were allowed as color accents.

In terms of foreign policy, Europe was shaped by Spain's aspirations for domination during his reign, but Venice managed to maintain its political independence. The political quarrels with the Turks over Venetian islands in the Mediterranean region, especially over Cyprus , one of Venice's most fertile taxpayers, continued under his reign and continued under his successor.

During Priuli's tenure, the silver coin Ducatus venetus was minted (for the first time in 1562), with a value of 124 Soldi. It shows the lion of San Marco on one side and the kneeling Doge on the other. The Venetian gold ducat was now called Zecchino .

His tomb is in the Church of San Salvatore. It is a double tomb for him and for his brother Lorenzo. The two-story tomb, built between 1578 and 1582, was designed by Cesare Franco. The statues of the namesake of the Doges, St. Lorenz and St. Jerome, were made by Giulio dal Moro.
