Frank Horvat

Frank Horvat (born April 28, 1928 in Abbazia, today Opatija , Croatia ) is an Italian photographer .

Life

Horvat was born the son of a doctor and went to primary school in Milan after his parents moved . In 1939 he and his family fled to Lugano in Switzerland ; there he attended high school. In 1945 he bought his first camera with his first own money. After returning to Italy in 1948, he began studying art at the Accademia di Brera in Milan. A year later he was working as a graphic designer for an agency in Milan .

He produced his first report in 1951, as a freelance photographer, about pilgrims in northern Italy. In 1951 he met the two photographers Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa in Paris . In 1955 he took part in the exhibition The Family of Man ; In 1959 he joined the Magnum agency for three years. He later also became active as a fashion photographer, for example for Vogue . Here he was considered a representative of an unpretentious, journalistically inspired small-picture aesthetic. In later years he dealt with digital imaging, including a. with the reinterpretation of his older work. Horvat lives in Boulogne-sur-Seine.
