Khola Maryam Hübsch (2017)

Khola Maryam Hübsch (born October 25, 1980 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German journalist and publicist. The freelance speaker and blogger is the daughter of the German writer Hadayatullah Hübsch and an Indian mother. She is involved in the Ahmadiyya community for interreligious dialogue.

Act

Khola Maryam Hübsch studied journalism , German , book studies and psychology at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . She writes for German newspapers (including the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Frankfurter Rundschau , Die Zeit , Cicero and Die Welt ) and scientific publications and gives nationwide lectures on Islam from the Ahmadiyya perspective. In 2012, the ARD morning magazine called her the “public face of Muslim women in Germany” and declared that Hübsch was a “welcome guest on talk shows; their opinion is heard ”. In the discussion rounds of the political talk formats of Anne Will , Menschen bei Maischberger , Phoenix Runde or log in , she appeared several times as a conversation partner. For seven years she was the nationwide commissioner for interreligious dialogue at the international women's organization Lajna Imaillah of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in Germany and as a moderator for the international Ahmadiyya television station MTA . It supports migrant media projects such as the television series “Aspects of Islam” and the format “Islam in focus”, which was awarded the Schleswig-Holstein state parliament's integration prize.

In April 2019, the Italian Deputy Foreign Minister Emanuela Del Re presented Hübsch with the “Mondoreligioni Award” from the Associazione Italiana di Sociologia (Italian Association for Sociology) for her commitment to human rights.

Lectures

In 2011, as part of the lecture series of the Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics” at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster, Hübsch gave a lecture on the image of self and the image of Muslim women. She gave further lectures at the Johannes Gutenberg University as part of the Festival contre le racisme , at the University of Koblenz-Landau , the Philipps University of Marburg , the Justus Liebig University of Gießen , the University of Fulda and at the Goethe University in Frankfurt on the Main . Hübsch is a speaker and podium guest at interreligious dialogues (on behalf of churches, synagogues and mosques as well as equal opportunities officers and the State Center for Civic Education in Hesse) and left-wing alternative institutions such as the Club Voltaire in Frankfurt and at the Frankfurt Book Fair . Her lectures deal with the topics “Islam and Enlightenment”, “Emancipation in Islam” and “Human rights and tolerance in Islam”. In addition, Hübsch gives courses on the media's portrayal of Islam and love and partnership in Islam. Further main topics are integration, Islamophobia in Europe, peace concepts in Islam and "Bio-Islam". In 2013, as part of the women's conference with the bishop of the Icelandic State Church in Iceland, she gave a lecture on the image of mankind of Islam using the example of Muslim women. In 2015 she was an expert in the Committee for Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid of the German Bundestag.

As part of the lecture series “Islam and Islamic Theology in Times of Radicalization” at the University of Gießen, Hübsch dealt with the foundations of IS terror and with it how Islamic theology and the aesthetics of western pop culture from ISIS in the 2015/2016 winter semester -Propaganda can be used.

Positions

Using sources of Islam, Hübsch argues for an understanding of Islam that, in their opinion, is compatible with democracy, tolerance and universal human rights. She is of the opinion “that Islam itself stipulates in the Koran that there must be a secular state. Pluralism is wanted, so I could give you countless verses from the Koran, and this reading of the Koran is widespread in Germany ”. Freedom of belief is manifested in the Koran, and everyone has the right to enter or leave Islam. For Hübsch, Islam is a modern religion that is in harmony with reason and the Enlightenment and represents an important source of inspiration for contemporary issues of postmodernism . She criticizes the one-sided narrowing of Islam to a mindless obsession in the widespread Islamic orthodoxy, which has lost the original core issues of Islam, such as the expansion of human consciousness through a living relationship with God. In her publications, Hübsch denounces the appropriation of Islam by Islamist agitators and letter-believing fundamentalists and "undifferentiated media reporting" about Islam. In her lectures and publications, she advocates a rational, gender-equitable and holistic reading of the Koran.

In September 2016, in the broadcast Maybrit Illner (ZDF), Hübsch refused to shake hands with guest Paul Ziemiak (CDU, Chairman of the Junge Union) behind the scenes. Ziemiak used this to criticize Hübsch during the show. She replied that it was her right to refuse to shake hands.

After the attacks on Charlie Hebdo on January 7th, 2015 , she spoke up for Islam on the program “Hart aber Fair” (ARD) . In it, she criticized, among other things, the fact, without, as the wording goes, “wanting to defend the burqa”, that double standards are measured: “If Muslims have to endure the caricatures, then this should also apply to the burqa in a pluralistic society . ”She regards the law on the prohibition of veiling , which was passed in France in 2011, as counterproductive.

In a public hearing of the Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid of the German Bundestag, Huebsch was “convinced that an open, friendly refugee policy could help improve the image of the West in the Islamic world. This could also help to contain terrorism ”.

After the sexual assault on women on New Year's Eve 2015/16 in front of Cologne Central Station, Hübsch pointed out that prejudices against Muslim men would be reinforced in the discussion. She said: “The new old resentments against Muslim men are also an expression of a cultural chauvinism that is appropriating feminism in order to divert attention from one's own sexism and racism.” According to Hübsch, most of the perpetrators would come from economically weak milieus.

On the Phoenix Runde program , the Islam critic Sabatina James remarked that Hübsch, as a member of the minority Ahmadiyya community , could not represent the views of Muslims: Ahmadiyya are rejected by many Muslims as non-Islamic and their followers are religiously disadvantaged or persecuted in some countries .

Private

In an interview with Alfred Schier , Hübsch confessed to living in a marriage arranged by her father; the marriage took place without a long relationship. However, she strictly separates between arranged dating agencies and forced marriages. In her book Freedom Under the Veil - What Islam can contribute to a truly emancipated image of women , she wrote:

“The Prophet Muhammad declared forced marriages to be invalid and annulled a forced marriage that he had become aware of. A prerequisite for a marriage must always be the voluntary consent of both partners, given without exertion of pressure. There is no doubt about that. The blanket condemnation of arranged marriages often has something to do with the fact that no differentiation is made between forced marriages, which are clearly un-Islamic, and arranged marriage agencies, which, in modern German, are more likely to be preceded by a service.
