Dietmar Mieth (born December 23, 1940 in Berlin ) is a German Catholic theologian and professor of theological ethics / social ethics at the University of Tübingen .

Live and act

Mieth grew up in Beckingen . After his assistantship and habilitation from 1967 to 1974 with Alfons Auer at the University of Tübingen, Dietmar Mieth was Professor of Moral Theology at the University of Freiburg im Üechtland from 1974 to 1981 . Then in 1981 he was appointed to Tübingen. Until his retirement in 2008, he held the professorship for theological ethics with special consideration of the social sciences.

In 1998 Dietmar Mieth founded the discussion group "Ethics in the natural sciences" (since 1990 "Ethics in the sciences") and thus created a forum for the first time at the University of Tübingen for interdisciplinary discussions on ethical issues between researchers, some of whom are themselves involved in new developments are. He continued this work as spokesman for the International Center for Ethics in Science , which he founded in 1990 under his direction .

Mieth works on several nationally important ethics committees. Mieth has been a member of the Bioethics Commission of the German Bishops' Conference since 2001 . Since 2003 he has been a member of the ethics committee of the Federal Ministry of Health . In addition, since 2003 he has been a member of the study commission on ethics and law in modern medicine of the German Bundestag. In 2007 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit with ribbon .

Mieth is chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Institute for People, Ethics and Science . Mieth was for many years president of the interdisciplinary Meister Eckhart Society. In 2014 he presented a presentation on Meister Eckhart . He married in 1968 and has two children, Corinna Mieth and Dominik Mieth. He is one of the signatories of the Church 2011 memorandum  : A necessary departure .
