Heinz-Otto Peitgen (born April 30, 1945 in Nümbrecht-Bruch ) is a German mathematician . His research areas are fractals and 3D visualization for medicine.

Life

Peitgen studied mathematics , physics and economics in Bonn from 1965 to 1971 . He then worked for six years at the Institute for Applied Mathematics at the University of Bonn , where he received his doctorate in 1973 and habilitation in 1977, each in mathematics.

In 1977 he took up a professorship for mathematics at the University of Bremen and, together with others, set up an institute for dynamic systems with a laboratory for computer graphics. In 1992 he founded the "Center for Complex Systems and Visualization" (CeVis) at the University of Bremen. From 1985 to 1991 he was Professor of Mathematics at the University of California at Santa Cruz ; from 1991 until his retirement in 2012 he was a professor for mathematics and biomedical sciences at the Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

In 1992 he was appointed to the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and in 2008 to the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen . Since 2015 he has been the dean of the math and science class of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.

In 1995 Peitgen founded the "Center for Medical Image Computing" in Bremen. In 2009, MeVis Research was converted into an institute of the Fraunhofer Society , now: “Fraunhofer Institute for Medical Image Computing MEVIS” for short: Fraunhofer MEVIS . On October 1, 2012, Peitgen retired from the University of Bremen and at the same time gave up the management of Fraunhofer MEVIS. In 1997 he founded MeVis Technology GmbH as a commercial spin-off from the research center MeVis Research gGmbH, which went public in 2007 under the new name MeVis Medical Solutions AG (MMS). Peitgen was chairman of the supervisory board until 2015.

In January 2013, the private Jacobs University Bremen appointed him its president. He thus succeeded Joachim Treusch . During his term of office, a contract was signed between the university, the Jacobs Foundation and the Bremen Senate for the financial rehabilitation of the ailing facility. Peitgen's “restructuring concept” presented in November 2013 did not convince the Supervisory Board. On December 31, 2013, the mathematician resigned from his position as President and Managing Director of Jacobs University and received a severance payment of 800,000 euros. In 2014 the second managing director of the university, Katja Windt , took over the post.
