Leopold Rosenmayr

Leopold Rosenmayr (born February 3, 1925 in Vienna ; † March 18, 2016 ) was an Austrian family, youth and age researcher , emeritus full professor of sociology and social philosophy at the University of Vienna , head of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for social gerontology and Life course research in Vienna and since 1990 a full member of the philosophical-historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

Life

After participating in the war and imprisonment, Rosenmayr studied philosophy and received his doctorate in 1949. From 1949 to 1953 he spent “apprenticeship and traveling years” in France and the USA. He then turned to sociology to "build bridges to society". In 1954 Rosenmayr founded a “social science research center” at the University of Vienna. He contributed to the revival of empirical social research in Austria after the Second World War . Leopold Rosenmayr completed his habilitation in 1955 and became Professor of Sociology and Social Philosophy at the University of Vienna in 1961.

Rosenmayr was the father of four children.

Act

His empirical work on urban, community, family, youth and age sociology brought Rosenmayr an international reputation. Rosenmayr examined the change in political values in highly developed societies , studied family relationships and leisure habits of young workers and wrote about the forces of old age.

Rosenmayr did research in Africa for decades, especially in the West African state of Mali . He has often led research projects in rural and urban settings. His studies focused on conflicts between the age groups as well as barriers and opportunities for young people in the development process.

honors and awards

Rosenmayr was a member of the Austrian Central Statistical Commission and an advisor and author for several government reports, such as the 1969 Family Report and the 1975 Women's Report. As a sociologist, he was involved in socio-political decisions. Rosenmayr was honored in 1994 by the Schader Foundation for this practical relevance, which runs through his scientific work . He was recognized for his decades of successful mediation between sociology and social practice. In 1998 Leopold Rosenmayr received the City of Vienna Prize for Humanities , and in 2002 he was awarded the Cardinal Innitzer Prize for Sociology.

In 2004 the Great Silver Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria followed. In 1979 he received the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art, 1st Class and in 1985 the Golden Medal of Honor for Services to the State of Vienna .
