Johann Baptist Herrenberger (* August 1759 in Oppenau ; † September 3, 1793 in Ludwigsburg ), popularly known and in robber circles after the origin of his father Konstanzer Hans , was a robber in Württemberg .

Life

In 1782, Herrenberger was captured by the Sulzer Oberamtmann Jacob Georg Schäffer . Schäffer succeeded in persuading Hans from Constance to make an extensive confession - which ultimately led to his pardon and appointment as auxiliary police officer. Hans from Constance named more than 500 crooks , revealed around 100 crooks' huts and thieves' shelters, prevented the Maria-Einsiedeln monastery from falling victim to an arson attack and wrote a dictionary of crooks' language .

Through his testimony, the “most prominent” robber in southern Germany at the time, Jakob Reinhard, known as Hannikel , was brought to the gallows.
