Philipp von Bismarck (born August 19, 1913 in Jarchlin , district of Naugard ; † July 20, 2006 in Obernholz , district of Gifhorn ) was a German farmer, general staff officer of the Wehrmacht , resistance fighter against National Socialism and politician ( CDU ).

family

Philipp von Bismarck was the second son of Gottfried von Bismarck (1881–1928), lord of Jarchlin and Kniephof , Naugard district and his wife Gertrud, née Koehn. His brother was Klaus von Bismarck (1912–1997), director of the WDR .

After the early death of his father, he was born in 1939 by his great-uncle Bernhard von Bismarck and his wife Käthe nee. Adopted by Arnim .

Philipp von Bismarck was the deputy secretary of the Bismarck Family Association.

Philipp von Bismarck was initially a farmer at Gut Külz. In 1935 he joined the Infantry Regiment 9 (" Graf 9" ) of the 23rd Infantry Division in Potsdam as a lieutenant and later as a battalion adjutant . As a general staff officer, he belonged to the resistance group around Major General Henning von Tresckow . In 1945 he was taken prisoner of war.

Philipp von Bismarck studied law and economics and received his doctorate in 1950 under Walter Eucken in Freiburg . He was later a board member of Kali Chemie AG and president of the Hanover Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

He was elected to the German Bundestag in 1969 for the CDU through a direct mandate in the Gifhorn constituency in Lower Saxony and was a member of the German Bundestag from October 20, 1969 until his resignation on September 6, 1979 (three electoral terms) . On June 10, 1979, Bismarck was first directly elected by the citizens to the European Parliament , to which he had been a member since 1978 (elected by the Bundestag).

From 1970 to 1983 he was chairman of the CDU Economic Council , of which he was then honorary chairman.

Philipp von Bismarck was involved in the Pomeranian Landsmannschaft from 1948 . In 1963 he became the first chairman of the Naugard home district committee, later he was its honorary chairman. In 1970 he became spokesman for the Pomeranian Landsmannschaft and a member of the steering committee of the German-Polish forum for reconciliation between the two neighboring peoples.

He was a member of the Evangelical Michael Brotherhood .
