Vittorio Eckard Klostermann , (born February 13, 1950 in Kronberg im Taunus ) is a German publisher .

Life

education

Vittorio E. Klostermann is the second oldest son of the publisher Vittorio Klostermann (1901–1977) and the actress Helene Pauline Klostermann , nee. Gries (1918-2003). After graduating from the Kaiserin-Friedrich-Gymnasium in Bad Homburg , he was a graduate student at the Leibniz College in Tübingen . He studied philosophy at the University of Tübingen . He gained his first practical professional experience in a Würzburg print shop , the Eschenburg bookstore in Kiel and the European Book Company in San Francisco .

Professional background

In 1970 he joined the Vittorio Klostermann publishing house founded by his father in 1930 , initially as his assistant. Later he was responsible for advertising, translation rights and the editing of philosophy. In 1976 he became a managing partner together with his older brother Michael Klostermann. After the death of their father in 1977, the brothers took over the publishing house. Klostermann has been the sole publisher and managing director since his brother's death in 1992.

Publishing work

Klostermann restructured the publishing house, dismantled established hierarchies and gave employees more responsibility. He tightened the publisher's program and concentrated it on the core areas of philosophy, legal philosophy and legal history , literary studies (with a focus on Thomas Mann ), bibliography and librarianship . The publication of the Black Booklet in Martin Heidegger's complete edition from 2014 rekindled the discussion about his position during the Nazi era . The presentation of the first volumes in the German National Library by Jürgen Kaube and the editor Peter Trawny used Klostermann to take a critical look at the history of the edition.

Klostermann agreed with Michael Nedo to continue the Vienna edition of Ludwig Wittgenstein's writings , which was published by Springer Vienna until 2000, after an interruption of 19 years. Volume 8.2 was the first to be published in March 2019.

Volunteering

In 1989 Klostermann founded the Literaturhaus Frankfurt eV together with KD Wolff . as the sponsoring association for the third literature house in Germany (after Berlin and Hamburg) . He was a member of the board of the German Society for Philosophy (1985–1991), on the board of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels ( 1998–2001) and chairman of the Association of Scientific Publishers (2008–2010). He was also a board member of the Kurt Wolff Foundation (2000–2002) and a member of the administrative board of the German National Library (since 1999).

Disputes over copyright law and the Heidelberg appeal

Vittorio E. Klostermann commented on the limitation of copyrights associated with the so-called “third media revolution” and the publishing rights derived from it in critical articles in the Börsenblatt for the German book trade and in daily newspapers. Together with the Heidelberg Germanist Roland Reuss , he initiated the Heidelberg appeal “For freedom of publication and the protection of copyrights” in 2009 : the appeal met with numerous signatories, but also with vigorous opposition. On the initiative of Roland Reuss and Volker Rieble and under the patronage of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Klostermann organized a conference on the subject of “Authorship as a work master in the digital age”. In January 2017, Klostermann commented on the draft bill on copyright as a threat to publishers in the Börsenblatt under the title “Esbrennt”.

Private life

Klostermann is married to Karin Kraus for the second time , their daughter Maja was born in 1999.
