Miklós Haraszti

Miklós Haraszti (born January 2, 1945 in Jerusalem ) is a Hungarian writer , dissident , journalist and politician .

Life

Miklós Haraszti studied philosophy and literature at the University of Budapest and in 1976 co-founded the Hungarian opposition movement. From 1981 to 1989 he worked as an editor of the Hungarian underground magazine Beszélő , he was co-author of various statements by Eastern European dissidents on human rights violations. In 1990 he represented the SZDSZ at the "round table" of the Hungarian Revolution and was a member of the first term of the free Hungarian parliament.

From March 2004 to March 2010, Miklós Haraszti was OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe for two terms (the maximum permitted) .

He is currently Adjunct Professor in the School of International & Public Affairs at Columbia Law School in New York.

He has also been the UN Special Rapporteur for Belarus since 2012 .
