Live and act

Yasemin Shooman, who, according to her own account, grew up trilingual in a “multi-religious family” and whose grandfather was interned in the Majdanek concentration camp , studied Modern History and Modern German Philology at the Technical University of Berlin (TU). She wrote her master's thesis on the forced Germanization of Polish children during World War II . From 2009 to 2013 she was a doctoral candidate with Wolfgang Benz at the Center for Research on Antisemitism (ZfA) at the TU Berlin. In her dissertation, she dealt with Islamophobic discourses in Germany. Yasemin Shooman has worked at the Center for Research on Anti-Semitism since 2002. She organized a series of events Testimonies (readings with witnesses) that the ZfA in cooperation with the Literature Forum in the Brecht House conducted. In 2006/2007 she worked in the research project The Place of Terror - History of the National Socialist Concentration Camps . In 2008 she organized a summer university against anti-Semitism at the TU Berlin. In 2008/2009 she headed the project office denk! Mal 09 in the Berlin House of Representatives , a youth forum against anti-Semitism, racism and right-wing extremism on the occasion of the day of remembrance for the victims of National Socialism . At the symposium hostility to Muslims - phenomenon and counter-strategies of the German Islam Conference in 2012, Yasemin Shooman analyzed Islamophobia on the Internet, referring primarily to the Politically Incorrect website . At an expert talk to which Federal President Joachim Gauck had invited in January 2015, Shooman gave a lecture on the subject of Islamophobia and described it as “a phenomenon of the middle of society”. Islamophobia has also "in many cases replaced the old slogan 'foreigners out'". Shooman pointed out that "exclusion affects not only practicing Muslims, but also those who are marked as Muslims because of their appearance or name". In an interview with the Integration media service , she described the anti-Islam rhetoric of the AfD and other right-wing populists as “'detour communication': In order to ward off the accusation of racism, Islamophobes disguise their resentment as criticism of religion and try to legitimize it,” said Shooman .

In 2013 she received her doctorate with her dissertation on the interplay of culture, religion, ethnicity, gender and class in anti-Muslim racism at the Center for Research on Antisemitism at the TU Berlin. The work was published in 2014 by transcript Verlag under the title "... because their culture is like this" - narratives of anti-Muslim racism .

From May 2013 to August 2019, Shooman headed the academy programs of the Jewish Museum Berlin and was responsible for the programs on “ Migration and Diversity ” and the Academy's Jewish-Islamic Forum. Shooman saw the academy as a “place for the general public” where knowledge about immigration and social diversity is imparted. “Migration as normal, not as a disruptive incident in history” should be made clear about the history of minorities.

In September 2019, Shooman took over as Scientific Managing Director of the science department of the German Center for Integration and Migration Research (DeZIM Institute).
