Gunther Hellmann
Gunther Hellmann (born May 19, 1960 in Karlsruhe ) is Professor of Political Science in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt. He teaches the subject with a focus on foreign relations for Germany and the European Union. His main research interests are in the areas of German foreign policy, Euro-Atlantic security relations and the theory of international relations .
Career
After graduating from high school and doing military service, Hellmann studied political science, history and philosophy in Freiburg , Munich and Washington DC from 1979 onwards. From 1989 to 1993 he worked as a research assistant in the political science department of the Free University of Berlin . There he received his doctorate in 1991 with a thesis on American-Soviet rivalry and cooperation in regional conflicts. In 1993 he moved to the Technical University of Darmstadt as a research assistant , and in 1999 he was appointed professor of political science at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. In addition to his professorship, between January 2000 and October 2001 he also headed a research group at the Hessian Foundation for Peace and Conflict Research (PRIF). From 2000 to 2006 he was a member of the board of the International Politics section of the German Political Science Association , and since 2002 he has been one of the editors of the Journal for International Relations (ZIB).
