Slashdot (abbreviation “/.”) Is a mixture of a web- based news ticker and a blog , geared towards technical news. Founded by Rob Malda in 1997 , Slashdot is now part of BizX LLC.

The core of the Slashdot audience consists of free software advocates , especially Linux . The contents of Slashdot is largely of summaries from other websites and references to these pages. Every reader has the opportunity to comment on a topic. This possibility of interaction is actively used. Usually several hundred to a thousand comments are written on a topic. To make it easier to find good comments, there is a moderation system, the ratings of which can be used to sort the comments.

history

In September 2012, Slashdot, SourceForge and Freecode were bought by the online job portal Dice.com for US $ 20 million and incorporated into the subsidiary Slashdot Media. After a redesign and the migration of selected users in February 2014, many long-term users criticized the new design. In February 2014, a 7-day boycott was organized by users.

In July 2015, Dice announced plans to sell Slashdot and SourceForge. In January 2016, the two portals were sold to the San Diego- based company BizX, LLC for an undisclosed amount.

Origin of name

Malda wanted to make fun of the syntax with the URL and confuse other people, because when you say the address of the website ( http colon slash slash slash dot dot org ) it is difficult to guess what is meant.

Software of the site

Slashdot's software is called Slashcode , it is written in Perl and is used for many other websites. The code is licensed under the GNU General Public License , which means it is free software .

RTFA phenomenon

Due to the strongly integrated discussion function, Slashdot is often not used to actually read the articles linked at the beginning, but to discuss the meaning of the message and the coherence of the summary. In addition to the function of Slashdot, there is also a jointly moderated forum . In this context, the abbreviation “RTFA” (“Read the fucking article”, cf. RTFM ) is important, which can be interpreted as a request as well as a statement (“I've read it”). In the discussion on Slashdot, this is an allusion to the fact that most contributions to the discussion are written without knowledge of the article. The RTFA phenomenon also occurs on other news sites with a comment function such as Digg and heise .
