Brookfield is a town in Waukesha County in the southeast of the US -amerikanischen state of Wisconsin . Brookfield had 38,649 residents in 2000, and an estimate in 2006 showed the population to increase to 39,613.

The city is after Waukesha the second largest in the county of the same name, which is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area . The city was formed in 1954.

Brookfield is located at 43 ° 3'29 "north latitude and 88 ° 6'53" west longitude and extends over 70.0 km², which is spread over 69.6 km² of land and 0.4 km² of water. Brookfield lies on the watershed between the Fox River , which drains into the Gulf of Mexico via the Illinois River and the Mississippi, and Lake Michigan , whose water flows into the North Atlantic via the Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence River .

Brookfield is 12 miles west of Milwaukee. The four-lane US Highway 45 runs north-south on the eastern edge of the city and US Highway 18 on the southern edge .

The city also has a number of rail lines running west from Milwaukee.

In addition to Milwaukee, the nearest major cities are Waukesha (14.2 km southwest), Wisconsin's capital Madison (114 km west) and Racine (66 km southeast).

Demographic data

In the official census in 2000 , a population of 38,649 was determined. These were distributed to 13,891 households in 11,223 families. The population density was 555.0 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 14,246 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 204.6 buildings per square kilometer.

The population in 2000 was 94.2 percent white , 0.8 percent African American , 0.1 percent Native American , 3.8 percent Asian, and 0.2 percent other. 0.8 percent said they came from at least two of these groups. 1.2 percent of the population were Hispanics belonging to any of the named groups.

26.8 percent were under 18 years of age, 4.6 percent between 18 and 24, 23.2 percent between 25 and 44, 27.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.6 percent 65 and older. The mean age was 42 years. For every 100 women there were 93.7 men, and 90.8 among those over 18.

The median income per household was 75,225  US dollars  (USD), the median family income 83,691 USD. The median income for men was $ 62,351 and that for women was $ 37,589. The per capita income was $ 37,292. Around 1.4 percent of families and 2.2 percent of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
