(3313) Mendel is an asteroid of the central main belt , which was discovered on February 19, 1980 by the Czech astronomer Antonín Mrkos at the Kle Observ observatory ( IAU code 046) near Český Krumlov . An unconfirmed sighting (1972 JB 1 ) of the asteroid had already occurred on May 11, 1972 at the Chilean observatory Cerro El Roble .

The asteroid belongs to the Eunomia family, a group named after (15) Eunomia , to which probably five percent of the asteroids in the main belt belong. The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (3313) Mendel are almost identical to those of seven smaller ones, if one considers the absolute brightness of 14.8, 15.0, 15.4, 15.8, 16.5, 16, 0 and 17.1 compared to 12.1, asteroids: (76475) 2000 FQ 58 , (87150) 2000 NW 18 , (129889) 1999 TH 25 , (186243) 2001 XZ 157 , (245333) 2005 ED 144 , (279783 ) 1999 TP 266 and (362724) 2011 UU 250 .

(3313) Mendel is named after the Austrian monk and geneticist Gregor Mendel . The appointment was made by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) had been named also by Gregor Mendel on 26 February 1994. In 1970, a crater on the moon ( lunar crater Mendel ) and 1973 Mars crater ( Mars crater Mendel ).
