Lewistown is a small town and the administrative seat of Fulton County in the middle of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2000 Lewistown had 2522 residents.

The city and its surroundings inspired Edgar Lee Masters , who grew up in Lewistown, to write his work Spoon River Anthology .

A historic Native American burial site is located about five miles southeast of the city in Dickson Mounds State Park .

The Illinois River flows 12 km east of the city . This forms a wetland in the floodplains that is protected as the Chautauqua Wildlife Refuge .

US Highway 24 runs through Lewistown and crosses Illinois State Routes 97 and 100 in the center of the city .

A railway line also runs through Lewistown in a northeast-southwest direction.

The nearest cities are Peoria (40 miles northeast), Illinois' capital city Springfield (96.7 miles southeast), Burlington , Iowa (126 miles northwest), and Macomb (35 miles west).

In the 2000 census, the population was 2,522. These were distributed over 1,092 households in 661 families. The population density was 535.4 / km². There were 1,183 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 251.1 / km².

The population in 2000 was 98.9% white , 0.1% African American , 0.2% American Indian, and 0.3% other. 0.5% said they came from at least two of these groups. 1.1% of the population consisted of Hispanics belonging to any of the named groups.
