In the early 20th century, many Sears Catalog Homes were built in Carlinville , prefabricated houses that could be ordered from the Sears mail order catalog . One of the models sold nationwide was named "Carlin", of which 152 of the original 156 buildings still exist today. The city was completed in 1918 by a settlement for the oil workers of what was then Standard Oil of Indiana .
