Native American people from the Potawatomi tribe were the first to settle in the region around Momence . These surrendered their land to the United States government on October 26, 1832 with the so-called Treaty of Tippecanoe and then went to a reservation near Council Bluffs . After the Potawatomi moved away, settlers from New York and Vermont came to Illinois and settled along the Kankakee River. The village was founded in 1834 and was initially named Lower Crossing , later the place was renamed Momence after Isadore Moness, a Potawatomi Indian. The Lunchroom Building was built in 1849 and is the oldest surviving building in Momence.

In 1871 the Chicago, Danville and Vincennes Railroad reached the city of Momence. In order to be able to continue the route behind the town, several bridges were built over the Kankakee River in the 19th and 20th centuries, which significantly changed the topography of the river. At that time, the city experienced strong growth, and in the 1890s and 1900s most of what is now downtown Momence, the Downtown Momence Historic District, was built . Most of the buildings in the old town are built in the Italianate style , but there are also buildings in the style of Greek Revival architecture , neoclassicism and neo-Romanesque .

In 1916 a plant of the automobile manufacturer Blackstone Motor Company opened in Momence , but the company was dissolved that same year. It was also around this time that the streets in the city were paved. In the early 1930s, Momence received a school building. After the Second World War , some companies settled in Momence again, which allowed the population to grow again comparatively strongly until 1960. Downtown Momence was modernized around 1970, and in May 2006 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
