The county is located in central northwest Illinois on the left bank of the Illinois River . To the south, the county is bounded by the Sangamon River , whose confluence with the Illinois River is in the extreme southwest.

history

Mason County was formed on January 20, 1841 from parts of Tazewell County. It was named by the new settlers after their former Mason County in Kentucky .
