The 17th stage of the Tour de France 2005 led from Pau to Revel and was the longest stage of this tour with a length of 239.5 kilometers. Apart from a few small hills, the route was pretty flat. In the twelve kilometer long additional loop around Revel, however, a third category mountain had to be overcome, an obstacle that should not be underestimated after such a long distance.
Andreas Klöden gave up the race after just 17 kilometers . The day before he was involved in a fall in which he broke his navicular bone .
After about 30 kilometers the first serious attempt to break away was made; a group of 17 drivers managed to break away from the field and quickly increase their lead. After almost 170 kilometers, the field was over 24 minutes behind. At 190 km, a group of eight riders formed at the front (including Paolo Savoldelli , Kurt Asle Arvesen , Sébastien Hinault and Simon Gerrans ), while the other nine riders fell behind.
At the beginning of the additional loop, the first group was almost three minutes before the second group; the field remained unchanged at 24 minutes. In the climb to the Côte de Saint-Ferréol, the leading group fell apart. Savoldelli was the first to reach the top of the pass, with Hinault right behind him; Gerrans and Arvesen followed with a few seconds behind and were able to catch up again on the descent. On the penultimate kilometer Arvesen tried to escape, but was caught up and sprinted by Savoldelli 100 meters before the finish line.
A few minutes after Savoldelli was already the winner, the field still had the additional lap ahead of them. On the ascent to the top of the pass, the field fell apart after Jan Ullrich tried to make up for Michael Rasmussen for seconds . The Dane was able to counter the attack with ease. Finally, the leaders in the overall classification crossed the finish line together, more than 22 minutes after the winner.
