history

In 1972, an "astronomy cabinet" was set up in a former transformer house in Bernau within just four weeks. A reflecting telescope with a 15 cm opening and a refractor were purchased. In 1973, however, the building was demolished and all equipment and teaching aids moved to the “Herrmann-Duncker-Oberschule”. In 1974 a new astronomy cabinet was set up at the Wilhelm Pieck Oberschule. When the school was renovated in 1979, the cabinet was moved to a barrack. In 1980, the current building on Fliederstrasse was moved to operate a school observatory there. In 1983 the observatory was attached to the "House of Young Pioneers". 1990 founded the amateur astronomers club "Astronomical Center Bernau e. V. “(AZB e.V.). The goals of the association are the popular science dissemination of astronomy and the preservation of the observatory for the public. In 1991 the observatory lost its function as a school observatory. The carrier was the “Freizeithaus Yellow”. In 1995 AZB e. V. took over the sponsorship and carried out extensive renovation work to make the observatory again usable for the public.

Since then, the Bernau observatory has regularly offered public sky observations and astronomical lectures.
