Grateful is a song by British pop singer Rita Ora from the soundtrack to the film Beyond the Lights (2014). The power ballad , written by Diane Warren , was nominated for " Best Song " at the 2015 Academy Awards.

background

Grateful was written by Diane Warren for the romantic drama film Beyond the Lights . The theme of the song is resilience. In the text itself, the lyrical self describes how it can ultimately triumph in spite of adversity and how all the stumbling blocks and barriers in her life allowed her to become the person she is today. The song was written at the request of the director Gina Prince-Bythewood for the pop and R&B singer Rita Ora, for whom it is a rather atypical song. The refrain is reminiscent of Celine Dion .

The song was uploaded on October 22, 2014 via the Soundcloud account of the record company Relativity Music Group . The premiere took place on Billboard.com . The song was then released on iTunes on November 11, 2014 as part of the film's soundtrack.

reception

The release of the song was not a good star. Beyond the Lights flopped despite the enthusiastic response from the fans who had seen it. The song was neither released as a single nor was a music video shot despite requests from both the songwriter and the director of the film. Shortly before, Rita Ora's second album had to be postponed after her former friend and record producer Calvin Harris withdrew all the songs he had written for her. As such, Grateful was an inexpensive option as she was able to work with well-known and experienced songwriter Warren. She described Ora's singing on the power ballad in advance as "amazing" and saw a good opportunity for Orda to steer her career in the right direction. Despite the great popularity of Warren, Ora did little to promote the song. Her publicity activity was limited to a few tweets , while instead promoting Doing It , a featuring with Charli XCX . Therefore Warren took care of the promotion alone. The Oscar nomination came as a surprise. Rita Ora also performed at the Academy Awards on February 22, 2015. But Commons and John Legends Glory from Selma won the Oscar . Gina Prince-Bythewood also distanced herself from the singer after the award ceremony and regretted asking her.

For Warren it was the seventh unsuccessful nomination for an Oscar.
