Malik Bendjelloul
Malik Bendjelloul (born September 14, 1977 in Ystad ; † May 13, 2014 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish documentary filmmaker and former child actor and Oscar winner.
Life
Bendjelloul was born as the son of the Algerian-born Swedish doctor Hacène Bendjelloul and the Swedish painter Veronica Schildt Bendjelloul . He grew up together with his brother, the cultural journalist and presenter Johar Bendjelloul , in Ängelholm in Skåne . He played from 1990 the role of Philip in the Swedish television series Ebba och Didrik . After high school, he studied film production and directing at the media school in Kalmar . Most recently he worked as a documentary filmmaker and for the cultural program Kobra of the Swedish national television (SVT). Bendjelloul committed suicide in May 2014. According to his brother Johar, he had suffered from depression .

The film Searching for Sugar Man was made in 2006 with camerawoman Camilla Skagerström . He describes the search for the American folk singer Sixto Diaz Rodriguez from Detroit , Michigan . This released two albums in the USA in the early 1970s, but they did not bring any commercial success. In South Africa, on the other hand, he became an icon. This development and the rediscovery of the singer in Detroit is portrayed in the documentary that brought Bendjelloul an Oscar, among other awards.
