Menachem Ben-Sasson ( מנחם בן-ששון) (Born July 7, 1951 in Jerusalem , Israel ) is an Israeli historian and politician. For the Kadima , Menahem Ben-Sasson was a member of the Knesset from 2006 to 2009 . From 2009 to 2017 he was President of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem .

Life

Menachem Ben-Sasson served in a Nahal unit in Ein Tzurim , a kibbutz in southern Israel, and in artillery units during his military service with the Israeli Armed Forces .

After completing his military service, he enrolled at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , where he received his bachelor's degree in history and philosophy. He then obtained his Dr. phil. in History of the Jewish People in the Islamic Lands .

He is on the board of directors of the Yad Vashem Memorial , was President of the World Union of Jewish Studies and is Vice-President of the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture .

Ben-Sasson lives in Jerusalem, is married and has three children. In addition to Hebrew , he also speaks Arabic , English , French and German .

College career

After completing his post-doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge , he became Professor of History of the Jewish Nation at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Between 1997 and 2001 he was the rector of the university and represented the Association of University Heads on the relevant committees of the Knesset.

As the successor to Menachem Magidor , Ben-Sasson was President of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem from 2009 to 2017.

Political career

In the 2006 elections to the Knesset, Menachem Ben-Sasson was able to gain a seat on the Kadima list. He was ranked 20th on the list and the Kadima scored 29 seats. He subsequently became a member and then chairman of the Committee on Constitution, Law and Justice (Chairman of the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee).

He was also chairman of the Committee on the Telephone Surveillance Act and the Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry into Telephone Surveillance. He also sat in:

  • Joint Committee for Discussion on the Law and Governance Order Bill (Annulment of Trial, Judgment and Administration) (Referendum)
  • Finance Committee
  • House Committee
  • Committee on Drug Abuse
  • Science and Technology Committee
  • Parliamentary Inquiry Committee on the Integration of Arab Employees in the Public Sector

He was also involved with several interest groups :

  • Lobby for Higher Education (Chair)
  • The Lobby for Closing the Social Gaps
  • Lobby for Jewish-Arab Coexistence
  • Jerusalem lobby
  • Lobby for the Druze and Circassian Communities

After the 2009 election , he lost his seat in the Knesset.
