Their parents tell them that the family will soon be changing and that their mother is pregnant and is expecting a sibling for Jamesy and Malachy. When the parents then decide to give the chickens away, the children are initially shocked and raise allegations against the parents. When the parents see how much the children are attached to the chickens, they decide to put on a dog instead. The children then flee, but are noticed by their father, who follows them. While on the run, they witness an arrest in the context of the Northern Ireland conflict . The father then returns home with the two children. When they wanted to slaughter the chickens the next day, they discover that one of the chickens laid an egg. This leads the parents to decide to keep the chickens.
