The Corn Island (original title: Simindis Kundzuli , Georgian: სიმინდის კუნძული) is a film drama by the Georgian director Giorgi Ovashvili from 2014. The German theatrical release was on May 28, 2015.

action

In its lower reaches, the Enguri River forms the border between Abkhazia and Georgia . An old Abkhazian farmer and his granddaughter want to sow and harvest maize on a temporary river island that was created in the spring . After a few days, the old man built a wooden house with the help of his granddaughter and the two then start sowing the corn kernels. From time to time, grandfather and granddaughter hear gunshots from afar. In addition, Abkhazian and Georgian soldiers on patrol drive past the island on boats to keep an eye on the growing granddaughter. One day the young girl discovers an injured Georgian soldier in the corn field, whom she and her grandfather are nursing. After a few days the young soldier left as suddenly as he came. When the grandfather and his granddaughter want to harvest the corn, a big storm approaches. While the young girl can save herself on a boat with some corn, the old man and with him the entire island goes under in the floods.

background

Due to the tense political situation, it was not possible to shoot on the Enguri River . The filmmakers built their own island in a reservoir.
