Japanese railway monument
A Japanese railway monument ( Japanese 鉄 道 記念 物 , Tetsudō kinenbutsu ) designates important objects and historical cultural assets of the Japanese railway system , which are appropriately identified in a formal procedure.
Facility
The basis is the "Guideline for the Protection of Railway Monuments " ( 鉄 道 記念 物 等 保護 基準 ) of the General Director of the Japanese State Railways . Since 1958, according to a system created in this way, historically significant objects of the railway system have been declared as Japanese railway monuments to technical monuments that are to be preserved.
After the privatization of the Japanese State Railways in 1987, the existing monuments were handed over to the successor companies of Japan Railways , which then did not award any awards for a long time. After a break of 32 years, the West Japan Railway Company began in 2004 to designate the "reserved monuments" ( 準 鉄 道 記念 物 , jun-tetsudō kinenbutsu , literally: "quasi-railway monument ") as a memorial during this break . This was followed in 2010 by the Hokkaido Railway Company by declaring objects to be "Japanese Railway Monuments".
overview
The "Guideline for the Protection of Railway Monuments" makes it possible to declare the following to be a "Japanese Railway Monument":
- Historical cultural assets of high value, such as old documents, rail vehicles, buildings and other facilities of the railway infrastructure , which may belong to the state railway but also to others.
- Objects that document the development of all railway facilities, such as signs, work materials and uniforms that may belong to the state railway or to others.
- Historically significant objects related to the development of the railroad, such as objects from the estate ( iseki ) of deceased who have made a contribution to the development of the railroad (including their tombs) and all places that were associated with the origins of the orals Tradition related to the railroad.
At the same time, the persons who are entrusted with the maintenance of the designated "Japanese Railway Monuments" are determined. From 1958 to 2010, the declaration of objects as a "Japanese Railway Monument" was generally made on "Railway Memorial Day" (today: "Railway Day", 鉄 道 の 日 ) on October 14th. During this time, the 43 subsequent artefacts were declared a railway monument.
