I'm Not Gonna Miss You is a song by Glen Campbell that he recorded with the studio band The Wrecking Crew . The song was co-authored by him and longtime producer Julian Raymond . The song was released on September 30, 2014 to accompany the documentary Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me . It is the country singer's last recording; his progressive Alzheimer's disease makes further musical activities impossible. The song was for the Academy Awards in 2015 for the award as best film song nominated and won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song at the Grammy Awards in 2015 .

background

Julian Raymond, who was a big Glen Campbell fan from childhood, has embraced the country legend since 2008 and already released the comeback album Meet Glen Campbell (2008), the 2011 album Ghost on the Canvas and the 2014 one Album See You There , based on the same session as its predecessor. In 2012 he was given the honor of taking on the musical design of the Grammy Awards show . That same year, Campbell received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences . A friendship developed between the two, and so Raymond decided to go the last way with the weaker and weaker Campbell. So he was on the last tour, which was part of the documentary Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me .

Julian Raymond suggested that director James Keach write one last song together with Glen Campbell. Keach had the creation of the song documented and made it part of the documentary. These are the last scenes in the documentary. The title and lyrics of I'm Not Gonna Miss You are based on a statement by Campbell. Confronted with his illness and the fear of the people around him, he said in essence that he did not know what the fuss was about. It's not as if he missed anyone afterwards. The text deals with the effects of his illness on him and also describes the great love he feels for his family and which he will forget in the course of his illness.

The recordings took place in January 2013 with Raymond and the studio musicians of the Wrecking Crew. Due to the special circumstances and the rapid progression of Alzheimer's disease, everyone involved was aware that it would be the last title that Campbell won. The song is therefore kept simpler than many of his famous songs. The original line-up is:

The song was released on September 30, 2014 initially as a download single to accompany the documentary. A music video was released on October 12, 2014. Directed by James Keach. The video shows both excerpts from the documentation and stations in Campbell's fifty-year career. Billboard.com said the video was as moving as Johnny Cash's video on Hurt .

On February 17, 2015, both the Extended Play and the soundtrack for Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me , on which the song can be found, were released. Campbell himself was no longer aware of the publications and the honors he received for the song. He had been in a nursing home in Nashville since April 2014 and couldn't remember his career.

reception

With this song Campbell and Raymond won a Grammy Award for best country song . In addition, both were nominated for an Oscar at the 2015 Academy Awards. Since Campbell could no longer perform, Tim McGraw took over the vocals at the Academy Awards. He was chosen by the Campbells family and considered the performance a great honor.
