The song was first heard in the trailer for the film. Adam Levine as the leading actor and Keira Knightley in the female lead will sing it in the film itself . The song is about people looking for their way and is filled with metaphors. Musically, the song in Levine's version is based on crooning and, initially only performed on the acoustic guitar, develops into a power ballad . In contrast, Knightley's version is greatly reduced. She made her debut in the film as a singer.
The song was released on the film's soundtrack. It was the first release from Levine's own label 222 Records . It also appeared as a bonus track on Maroon 5's album V (2014).

A live version of the song, performed as a duet by Levine and team member Matt McAndrew on season seven of The Voice , peaked at # 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 .
The song received both a Critics Choice Award for Best Original Song and an Oscar nomination for Best Song . In both cases, however, Glory won from Common and John Legend . Adam Levine appeared with Lost Stars as the first artist to appear at the 2015 Academy Awards on February 22, 2015.

Stevie McCrorie won the fourth season of The Voice UK with Lost Stars . The single version was released on April 5, 2015; 20 pence of the proceeds went to the BBC's Performing Arts Fund Charity. The cover version reached number 6 on the UK singles chart .
