Movie trailer Citizenfour

Citizenfour is an Oscar-winning documentary by Laura Poitras about the American whistleblower Edward Snowden and the global surveillance and espionage affair he exposed . The title of the film refers to the pseudonym Edward Snowden used when he first covered the wiretapping practices of the National Security Agency .

action

In January 2013, Laura Poitras received an encrypted email from a stranger who called herself Citizen Four. In it he offered her inside information about illegal wiretapping practices of the NSA and other secret services . At that time, Poitras had already been working for several years on a film about wiretapping programs in the USA that had started as a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 . In June 2013, she flew to Hong Kong with the investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald and the Guardian intelligence reporter Ewen MacAskill and her camera for the first meeting with the stranger, who identified himself as Edward Snowden. Several more meetings followed. The recordings made form the basis of the film.

production

As a production company, Praxis Films was involved in the production of the documentary. The co-producing German broadcasters are Norddeutscher Rundfunk and Bayerischer Rundfunk . The companies RADiUS-TWC in the United States, Britdoc Foundation in Great Britain and Piffl Medien in Germany are responsible for film distribution in the cinema. The broadcasting rights for television were given to Channel 4 (UK), HBO Documentary Films (USA) and ARD (Germany).

The film began under the working title The Program . This represented the third part of a trilogy that deals with the facets and effects of the war on terror . It started with My Country, My Country and the second part was published under the title The Oath .

Filming began in June 2013 in a hotel room at the Mira Hotel in Hong Kong. Edward Snowden, Glenn Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill are at the center of these documentary recordings.

publication

The international film premiere took place on October 10, 2014 in the United States at the New York Film Festival . In Europe, the documentary was shown for the first time on October 17th at the London Film Festival . The premiere in Germany was on October 27th as part of the Leipzig Film Festival . The director Laura Poitras was present at a preview in Hamburg's Abaton cinema on November 4th and at the official German premiere at Kino International on November 5th. The film has been shown in German cinemas since November 6, 2014.

The public broadcaster Das Erste showed the voice-over version of the documentary as a German television premiere on November 23, 2015 . German speakers were u. a. Markus Haase for Edward Snowden , Najima El Moussaoui for Laura Poitras and Philipp Schepmann for Glenn Greenwald .

reception

The majority of international cinema and festival audiences rated the film positively; it received 8.1 out of 10 stars in the IMDb (as of January 2016).

The New York Times reports of a potential Oscar nomination for the film and sees a major strength of the film in making the background to the NSA surveillance scandal of 2013 and 2014 understandable, as well as the motives of its unveiling artist Edward Snowden . In another article, the New York Times celebrates the film as an exciting and frightening thriller, horror film and a fable about the digital age with the confrontation of the individual with the state and emphasizes that no film like this has so far managed this image of an all-embracing one and the almost omnipotent state as it came to light in the NSA surveillance scandal.

The British daily The Guardian praises the film as an important and courageous educational work to strengthen democracy and human rights and then points out that it is in the hands and power of the citizens to defend themselves against total surveillance and control by the powerful: “Maybe we all need to think again. Citizenfour is a gripping record of how our rulers are addicted to gaining more and more power and control over us - if we let them. "

The British BBC is impressed by the film, which it considers to be the most important documentary of 2014.

Richard Corliss from the US news magazine TIME also praised the film and ascribes the film a central role in educating and informing about the US government's all-encompassing wiretapping practice.

Sascha Westphal from epd Film awarded 3 out of 5 stars and judged: “The film does not provoke a riot. One cannot even be sure whether the story of an individual who opposes power is actually becoming something of a role model. Although Laura Poitras herself was repeatedly monitored and therefore moved to Berlin, the horror and dangers of a reality that has become Kafkaesque , in which the NSA and other secret services place practically all of humanity under general suspicion, are hardly tangible. "
